👉 Apple’s Mysterious “System Data” Problem: What’s Eating My Storage?

Sometimes, I could pull my hair out and cry to sleep due to an issue with Apple’s system data. What am I talking about? Well, let’s read on.

MacBook Pro

When I got a new MacBook Pro due to my old one’s battery expanding, I thought I would go for one that was a little bit more beefy. It is not like a beefy sandwich or burrito, but it is a bit more potent than the one I had before I picked it up.

Let’s review the old one.

  • Year 2019 model 13” model
  • 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core I5
  • 8GB  2133 MHz LPDOR3
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB
  • 256GB Hard Drive

This was a good model; I enjoyed using it. It had a few issues, but I thought it would be good when I got it.

Note to self: 256 GB isn’t big enough for me to do things with, especially the darn system data. It would get nigh now, but I could usually restart my computer, and then it would go down.

Now, let’s look at the latest MacBook Pro I have.

  • MacBook Pro 14”
  • M3 Max Chip
  • 36GB Memory
  • 30-Core GPU
  • 1TB SSD hard drive
  • Space Black
  • Supports my three external monitors

I like this laptop. But that is enough about MacBooks. Let’s talk about System Data.

System Data

I am unsure what this system data is about and why it takes up so much room on your MacBook. I got a notice the other day about low local storage. I was thinking, “What the heck? Why is it low?” I have 1 TB of data, and whenever I do something, I move it off to one of my NAS (Network Attached Storage) servers.

I went through and removed all the usual stuff

  • Log files
  • Cache files
  • Temporary files
  • I even removed OneDrive linking to my MacBook due to it being in the container at 400GB
  • Did the backups to Time Machine after I did all the changes
  • Still taking up

So what is eating up all the storage space? I even disabled Spotlight; I never really used it. I removed all the files, but the drive is still full of system data.

I even contacted Apple Support, and they looked at everything I did, but they can’t figure out the Spotlight stuff either.

Online

Looking online, I see that many people are having an issue with this system data crap, especially in Sequioa. I think it is a bug, and Apple needs to fix it. Something is chewing up that hard drive space. I am not sure why nothing worked for me that the people online said worked.

I even removed all the stuff from Spotlight

Removed all Options
Removed all options for Spotlight

And added the following to the privacy

Added all my disks so Spotlight does not scan for them.

I am unsure why some people can get rid of it and others can’t.

Get fixed

I wonder if this will ever get fixed. I have a program called Clean My Mac, and it goes out and finds stuff to clean up that isn’t needed anymore. But nope, it hasn’t cleaned up this crap. So I can get my storage back.

Update

I have removed OneDrive from the computer, unlinked the account, and removed 400GB from the storage. I also removed 220 GB for some screen recordings, but it only took away 200 GB.

But it is still growing. What the heck is going on?
